Focusing Through The Lens: Week 21

Hey y’all! We have made it to another Wednesday which means we are off for a walk focusing through my lens! This week we are going on a bit of trip. A couple of weekends ago, we drove to the Little Grand Canyon of Arkansas just down the road from White Oak State Park. You can read about our trip here. I wanted to share some of the amazing views here on our weekly walk through the lens. Grab a comfy pair of shoes and let’s go! Our trip to the Little Grand Canyon was full of water, hiking, wonderful views, and memories. If you haven’t gone, you should go and make sure you check out both sides of the Little Grand Canyon.

Adventure

Arkansas Adventures: Little Grand Canyon

Welcome to the next adventure in Arkansas. This trips we are going to the “big” city of Bluff City/Chidester. We are going to the Little Grand Canyon of Southwest Arkansas. Directions: take I-30 to Gurdon. Jump on Hwy 53 South. Turn left on Hwy 24 and turn on HWY 332. You don’t want to go to White Oak, but lower White Oak area. You will need to drive over a levee to get to the parking spot. You will think you are driving into the woods but don’t worry you are right where you should be. Being from SW Arkansas, I am not bothered at all about driving into the woods. I promise that dirt area is the “parking lot.” You are going to want to wear comfortable shoes. I wore rubber boots along with Glitter and Hubby. It had just rained and we thought it would be super muddy. As it turns out we didn’t need rubber boots but they came in handy to get into the water. Grab your phone, camera, water and bug spray and go find what is out there. When we arrived I wasn’t sure what to expect but the amazing views did not disappoint. I spent so much time just sitting on the cliff enjoying the water’s view. It was quite, peaceful, and really helped my soul feel full. I promise there are pictures to go along with this. I hope you enjoyed this Arkansas Adventure. If you are looking for more Arkansas Adventures you can click here to check out some of ours. DeGray Lake or Garvan Gardens.

Focusing Through The Lens: Week 20

This week we are taking a walk through the Jonquils at Historic Washington State Park. This walk has a short window because Jonquils have a limited time before they start fading. Also the Jonquil Festival is just around the corner. So let’s put on our walking shoes and go smell some flowers. Thank you for taking a walk through the flowers with me. I enjoy our walks and hope you do too! Don’t forget to share which photo you liked in the comments.

Focusing Through the Lens: Week 19

Today we are going to be enjoying some water views on Focusing Through the Lens series. This Winter has been very mild compared to other Winters. Just recently we had a couple of 70 degree days and the water was calling. We answered the call and headed off. Thank you for walking by the water with us this week. Do you like wood hikes or water hikes?

Garvan Gardens: Holiday of Lights Edition

I know this is out of season but our adventures in Arkansas have kept us busy and I am learning to keep up with a schedule for this year. So bear with us and come take a trip to the Holiday of Lights at Garvan Gardens. This year we made the decision to gift experiences instead of physical gifts. At first we were not sure how Glitter was going to take the idea but truthfully she was all in. She surprised us by saying she would rather have experiences instead of the gifts she may or may not use. She was given coupons to use through out the year. I couldn’t wait until Christmas to give her first present. Plus we wanted to do something to get in the mood of season. So we gave her a box stuffed with a bunch of little pieces of leftover wrapping paper with the first coupon mixed in. It was for a night at Garvan Gardens during the Holiday of Lights. To say she was excited is an understatement! She asked us if we were serious about getting to go. This made me decide we need to focus more on spending time together and having some adventures instead of spending time at work. We told her yes, we are very serious about going and she picked Saturday. As I clicked on the website, all the tickets were gone for that day. So instead, she asked if we could go on Sunday. We snagged the tickets and just had to wait a couple of days. We really had no clue what to expect but we knew we wanted to arrive as soon the gates opened at 4pm. It is a good thing we got there not long after the gates opened because the first parking lot/strip was nearly full and they were about to start parking in B group. The line to get in wasn’t too much of a wait. They really are prepared to have a lot of people coming through. The decorations were full on from the beginning. The arch over the entrance was full of baubles, ornaments, and lights which gave you the feeling of stepping into another world. There was still a little while before the sun set and we could get the full affect of the lights, but this allowed us to get our game plan together for getting to see everything. I could keep adding pictures but I would have to leave off the list of things you should take with you. Cash. They do take cards just about every where but we found using cash at the concession stand easier. Actual camera. This allowed me to get some better shots than with just my iPhone 8. Comfortable walking shoes. You will be walking for about two hours. Battery charger for phones. This came in handy because all three of us ended up using it due to the amount of pictures we took. A jacket/sweater and gloves. It is towards Winter and the weather is a bit unpredictable. If you haven’t been during the Holiday of Lights, you should make plans to go later this year. This is on our list to do each year we are able to. Have you been or is it on your list to do this next season? Until we meet next.

Focusing Through the Lens: Week 18

On Week 18 of Focusing Through the lens, we are on another Winter walk around my house. When we can’t get out and get on hiking trails, we take the the woods around our house. This was a couple of weekends ago, I only had a Sunday off but the weather was so very nice, so off to the woods we went. Come take a virtual Winter walk through my lens. Thank you for coming on this virtual walk with me. I can’t wait to hear what you enjoyed about our walk. Until we next meet.

Focusing Through The Lens: Week 16

I promised the series would be back and today is the day! I haven’t stopped photographing just kind of lost track of time. So I will be catching y’all up in the next coming weeks. We have been also busy doing lots of adventures in Arkansas which I hope to get on here soon. So without further ado here we go! We went to Garvan Gardens as an early Christmas present for Glitter. For presents this year, we decided to gift experiences instead of physical gifts. This was our family’s first time going and we had no clue what was in store for us. I know there wasn’t much talk about actual trip but never fear, I will be sharing about the trip soon. Do you have a memory of a trip to Garvan Gardens or is it on your wish list? I can’t wait to hear which picture is your favorite.

Self
Adventure, Stories

A lost list and Year word.

Usually at the beginning of each year, I like many others pick a word for the coming year. Last year, I tried out 19 things for 2019. This didn’t work out very well for me. Instead, I forgot the list and just kind of made it through the year like most of us. Towards the end of the year, things started turning around for me and I didn’t mind the list was lost. However, for 2020 I wanted to go back to a word to help me focus. This has been something which was picked really about November but keeping close to flesh out how this could help my goals for this new year. Through a series of events which included attending national business/social media conference and started a weekly series on my blog (Thank you for all who have read and I promise it is coming back), I began to realize it was time to start focusing on what I wanted to do. This lead me to keep circling back to the word: self. I have always thought self as selfish and narcissistic but as I have gotten older maybe it doesn’t have to mean something negative. I am learning there are many things associated with self: self care, self expression, self acceptance, self discovery, or self reliant. Maybe there are some good things with self for me to look for. 2020 is going to be my self year. I hope you will take this little journey with me. Do you pick a word for the year? How do you feel about the word “self?”

Adventure, Camping

Lake Dardanelle

We recently had the chance to go back to Lake Dardanelle State Park to have another weekend camping trip. Our first trip which includes the great fish escape can be found here. But this time, we wanted to go back and spend more time around the campsite and also to take advantage of what else the park had to offer. Before I share about our trip, I want to share a little about the park. The price of a campsite B with 30 amp/water is only $23.00 a night. There is also a campsite AA with 30 amp/water/sewer for $32.00 a night. This park is a great place to go fishing so don’t forget your fishing pole/boat. There are also some great interpretation programming the parks offers like: Creatures of the Night, The Stories of Lake Dardanelle, and a Lake Cruise. The visitor center/check in area is an amazing place to spend a little or a lot of time learning about the fish, wildlife, and the river in this area. Seriously even though we had been here before, we spent another hour and a half looking at all the displays and playing with the turtles. Of course we had to have a quick trip through the gift shop where we picked up a book called “Start Mushrooming: The Reliable Way to Forage” by Stan Tekiela as well as a patch and keychain. We try to get a patch and keychain from all our travels since Glitter collects keychains and the patches stay in a notebook. This allows us to remember our trips without a bunch of clutter. We picked campsite B for our little vintage pop up. The campsite came with a picnic table, paved driveway, stationary grill and a fire pit. There were a couple of downsides of staying in site 55. All the sites in this loop where grouped close together. The bathhouse is located in another loop altogether. That was another drawback for us since our pop up doesn’t have a bathroom in it. The other major drawback for us was the night light on top of our campsite which shined brightly into the camper. When we got back Saturday afternoon, we took a walk on the self guided trail which was right by our camp loop. It is a fairly simple trail with a complete time of about an hour. If you have have ever hiked with me or ask my hubby, the time is a shot in the dark. I end up stopping about three thousand times taking pictures of things I find interesting. So our hour walk turned into about two hours but it was well worth the fun. Here are a couple of the things I found interesting. I will say even with thesee three drawbacks, we still made the best time for us. Saturday we did make the drive to Petit Jean State Park to spend a little bit of time with a couple of my friends and to grab lunch from Mather Lodge. The burgers are our favorite there. I love the Petit Jean Burger without the green chilies and add Petit Jean Peppered Bacon and my husband loves the Mather Lodge Burger. Just look at this yummy burger. Supper that night was preplanned before we left town. So when we got to the camping town, we went shopping to pick up supplies. This allows us to save on ice and how heavy we pack our truck/camper. So supper was hamburger steak with a mushroom gravy and pan fried potatoes. Y’all camp food doesn’t have to be boring. I challenge you to make something different next time you cook on a campfire and share about it here. Overall, our trip was a good one. Even though this park is not one of our favorites, we might go fish or hike the trails. On our park scale 1 camper for the worst and 10 campers for the best Lake Dardanelle is: 5 campers. Have you stayed there?
