Word for 2022

For the last few years, I have participated in the one word for the year. https://aliciadowell.com/2021-word-for-the-year/ https://aliciadowell.com/a-lost-list-and-year-word/ https://aliciadowell.com/2019-started-with-a-bang-and-a-list/ https://aliciadowell.com/new-year-of-discover/ I have spent quite a bit of time choosing a word. At first, there were two which stood out to me: Act and Brave.  There are many things I have dreamed up and wanted to do but never acted on. My husband or my friends can tell you about this. I could blame many things but truthfully I am scared. Imposter syndrome is tough to deal with. However, I am learning to deal with it and tune it out.   I began to form my post in my head of my one word (or two words) for the year. I usually start the idea of a post in my head and get to paper or my computer as soon as I can. I grabbed my journal to write down the ideas I had and my mind sorta just washes the ideas away. Now I have no word for the year. This hasn’t happened to me before and I am not sure how to take it.   I take to what helps my brain to get the creative juices flowing: podcasts, reading, and just writing. As I am listening, one word keeps popping up in most of them. After hearing it again, I write it down and start listing how this word could help me focus on what I want to do this year.  I hear this quote which seals the deal for me: “The creative process is not simply about what is being made. It’s entirely a mystical process that teaches us how to move between the eternal world of the soul and the physical world outside.” Christi Johnson.  CREATE  This word holds so much I want to do this year. So much I want to create and bring into everyday life. Create things which have been living in my head for so long. Create opportunities for me to bring joy to people. Create art. Create the big scary things I have wanted but never thought I was good enough. Create whatever I can dream this year.  I hope you will create with me this year. Do you have a word of your own for 2022? I can’t wait to hear about it!

Adventure Time: Stockyards of Ft. Worth Texas

It is not often I have adventures outside of Arkansas but it does happen. A couple of months ago, I went to see my friend Taylor in Texas. We ended up making a day/evening trip to Ft. Worth. So grab your adventure shoes, water and lets go! I will be the first to admit, I did no research on Ft. Worth. I had no clue places I should go, eat at, or skip. However, this made the day a blank slate for us. (Bless my friend for dealing with me saying all the time: “I am good with anything.”) We did the tourist thing of going to the Stockyards. If you haven’t been, you should go. We didn’t get make it in time to see either one of the daily cattle drives but one day, I will make it back. We did go and visit lots of the shops. One shop grabbed our attention because we are both tea drinkers. It is called The Spice & Tea Exchange. You can shop online too. There were two parts to the store (spices and then tea) and the tea side was my favorite side. Of course I had to get Glitter a t-shirt. I also opted to skip on the rodeo this time but will be back to see one. One thing which was offered was pictures with cows/horses and their owners who were rodeo people. I almost took a picture with a big long horn bull but passed due to the amount of people wanting to get one as well. We also went inside of a couple of the hotels which are located in the stockyard areas. One was called The Stockyard Hotel. It has been there for over a 100 years. The inside was very simple with a Western charm to it as you can tell from the photo below. I bet if the walls could tell their story it would be a good one. Another one was the Hotel Drover. It is a newer hotel which gets it name from the drovers who drove the long horn cows through Texas. Even for a newer hotel, they took a lot of time to make it look like it belongs in the Stockyard. I will say even though we didn’t see everything, you could for sure make an entire afternoon experience in the Stockyards.

A long break and reason why

I seem be saying: it is has been a while a lot. This time, I want to explain a little why this keeps happening. I have this thing were I feel like I am fake and someone is going to find me out. I know it is called imposter syndrome and lots of other people are in the same boat as myself. It has hit hard as I have leaned into my photography. I found myself in many Facebook groups on photography and editing, as people were posting their photos, the little voice inside my head kept telling me you are not this good. You must quit because you will never be this good or have the skills they have. And I listen to that voice for a long time and let it rule how I felt about myself. One day it hit me. It doesn’t matter what my little voice says, I have spent two years growing in my skill set and learning more about what it takes to get a good shot. Also lots and lots of practice. Recently, we went on a little trip back to a place in the middle of the Ouachita Forest and we spent a couple of hours there. In that couple of hours, I took a lot of pictures and will only use about 20 of them. This is to say, when you think you got the shot, take a few more. Something else I have been working on is taking pictures of people. This has never been my strong suit but it is something I would like to learn. I am sure Glitter is tired of my asking her to let me take some more pictures of her. All this is to say, I am back. I am not saying for sure how much I will be posting. However, I have missed you all and can’t wait to get back on the “horse” and start blogging again.

2021 Word for the Year

Here is it is three months into the new year but I have been sitting holding on to my word, savoring how I could use this to help me get things done for this year. As for my word for the year, I thought about it. Mulled over what how I used last year’s word, Self. This helped me take the leap to open my Etsy shop and spend more time enjoying what I like to do. I am working on stepping into my goals and not being sorry for who I am. his year, I wanted to continue on growing. As I started thinking about a word for this year, the word BE kept sticking out. I would see it all over the place in different phrases or just the word. BE started rolling around in my headspace. I am not sure how this word will help shape my year but I am excited to see how this year turns out. I can’t wait to share how things happen and how things be for me. Do you pick a word for the year? Are you a goal setter? How has your 2021 started out for the first 3 months? Let’s connect in the comments! Until next time dears.

Focusing Through the Lens: Week 41

We are back again this week! Again, the pictures are of the snow we got to play in last week when there was so much! Around here, there was still snow on the ground when we left the house this morning even after a day in the 70s yesterday. Now that snow left was in the deep shadows and where the Sun really doesn’t reach. But for my little snow happy heart, I will take it! Grab your boots and some hot cocoa and see what in focusing through the lens this week. Thank you for coming along for another snowy walk to see what was focusing through the lens this week. Don’t forget to tell me what was your favorite picture this week in the comments! Until we next meet!

Focusing Through the Lens: Week 40

This past week has been a little different than most weeks. To begin with, we had quite a bunch of snow hit us. This was combined with temperatures we have not seen in many years. So this week, Focusing through the Lens is brought to you from my home base. We were stationed at home for the greater part of the week. So let’s get our coats on, grab your warm boots, and let’s see what is focusing through the lens. If you got snow, I hope you got to go enjoy it a little, even if snow/cold are not your cup of tea. I have a few more photos to share of our snow week. Are you a snow fan? Summer more your jam? Tell me about it! Until next we meet.

Focusing Through The Lens: Week 39

Hello dears! I have set a goal to keep my weekly series going this year. I am looking forward to sharing pictures with you each and every week. Yes, I know I am a little behind on posting the weekly series, but over the next week there will be more posts to make up up for the missing weeks. This week, we are going to Sugar Creek in the Ouachita National Forest. This place was suggested to me by my good friend Taylor. She has deep rich history with this place. In fact, her name sake, The House of Sugar Creek, comes from here. Go check her site out after we grab our wellies, a drink, and jackets. Let’s get out and see what is focusing through the lens this week. Make sure you look at the last picture. I saved the best for last, in my opinion. Let me know which is your favorite. Thank you for coming along with me to Sugar Creek. I can not wait to get go back up when it is warmer and dip some toes into the creek. Have you visited this area? Or do you want to now? Let me know in the comments which was your favorite picture and about the visit. Until next time my dears.

Update and Explanation for this week.

Ah Monday is here which means, the start of a new week as begun. This week will look a little different around here. Why you ask? Well for starters, what feels like a life time ago, I started a weekly series. And I have not kept up this weekly series as I should have. The series started in August of 2019 and to be honest, 2020 was a hard year for me just like I am sure it was hard for everyone. However; in 2021, I want to make sure I keep up weekly. We started out with Week 38 and I have gotten a little behind. However, with this being the 1st of the month, it feels like a bit of a fresh start. This means, I am going to do my best to get caught back up and post 4 “weekly” posts. The first one will be going live later this afternoon. Make sure you check back and I can’t wait for you to see this one! Until next time dears.

Well hello my dears! It appears the last time I posted was last year. How did time get away from me? Usually, I take two weeks off but the past year/couple of months have been a trying time for us all. Even though it has been a little while since I last posted, I have some Christmas/Winter themed photos for this week’s focusing through the lens. Let’s grab our jackets, gloves, and a hot drink to see what is focusing through the lens. That is it for this week my dears! I am planning on keeping on a better schedule this year than 2020. I hope you will join me as we see what is focusing through the lens as this year unfolds. Until next time!
